Kali Protectives Amara Helmet Review
Look what arrived at the Fakawi Bike Shrine today! A new helmet by new helmet manufacturer, Kali Protectives. Named after the Hindu goddess Kali, who is usually portrayed as a 4 armed goddess donning a necklace made out of human skulls, this company sure knows a thing or two about making protection for your skull.
Local Kali distributor, Trailridermad , passed this beautifully made Kali Amara (immortal) trail helmet for testing and what do you know, the large sized lid fits this testers head just nice.
At first glance, the Amara looks cool. The 17 vents on it will do a good job channelling cool trail air through your hair during your ride.
The helmet itself is styled after the legendary Giro Xen all mountain helmet, offering ample protection on the sides and the occipital region of the head. Despite the bulky look, the helmet's weight is comparable to lighter racer boy XC helmets.
The finishing on the helmet is top-notch, utilising Kali's Composite Fusion technology to fuse the external plastics shell flush with the underlying foam, leaving no air space in between.
The helmet fit is comfortable, with plenty of padding on the inside. The padding is a one-piece constuction, making it easier to peel off when washing. Putting it back on is as easy as sticking it back on it's velcro attachment. No more multiple piece jigsaw puzzle padding to assemble. Bug netting for the front vents is incorported with the padding to keep creepy crawlies out ofyour hair..
The ratchet locking buckle at the rear is identical to that used in Fox Flux helmet. Only difference is the plastic band attaching the buckle to the helmet appears thicker and more robust.
The white visor is fixed and is not adjustable. My only complaint is that riding with the white visor on a bright day is just as distracting as riding without a visor. I may have to paint the under surface black after this to block out the glare.
The unique selling point for this helmet is it's camera mount at the top of the helmet. It's a rail system which can take 2 types of camera mounts. Included with the helmet are a pivot style mount for GoPro type camera (although it is not compatible with GoPro helmetcams) and a clamp for lipstick camera / small LED light.
Do check out the Kali Amara the next time you are out shopping for an XC bike helmet.
