Been riding mountain bikes since 1994.
First bike was an Alpinestars fully rigid. I'm still riding that bike today but stays on the road. She hasn't seen real dirt for years.
Then I got into full suspension tech...a Proflex 756. The year was 1996. At that time that was a killer looking bike.
I became a Specialized fanboy for years.
I now have a Ti hardtail, SC Blur LT2, and a Monty Kamel219. Yeah, my Alpinestars too!

Pandora replied to the topic Re: Specialized Epic comp or Stumpjumper Carbon HT??? in the forums. My thoughts.
Honestly, a hardtail can go almost anywhere a fullsus bike goes. I say almost because I doubt anybody would want to huck a hardtail at the Redbull Rampage!
It's just a different feel and the techniques involved are slightly different. The general techniques are the same. Some riders swear by hardtails and some swear by full sus. So it really is a personal preference of what a rider likes. As for me, I enjoy both. My opinion is that a hardtail won't go out of place in the future. It's future proofed. A full sus will eventually end up a dinosaur as technologies move forward.
Another area to look at is the geometry. Some frames are designed for XC and some more toward trail/all mtn riding. For example, a XC hardtail and an all mtn hardtail are two different beasts. The former is fast uphill, maneuverable, a little sketchy flying down and the latter is slack, steady and gives more confidence to bomb down.
On a hardtail, the lines you pick will be different from a fullsus. And therefore the ride you get out of it will be different. You might have the impression you're going faster on a hardtail because your rear is bouncing around more, searching for traction and feels like you are at your limit. You are the suspension and you need to be more dynamic in riding one. It can be a lot of fun pushing a hardtail in kiara.
On a full sus bike you get to sit and consistently pedal more in techy terrain as compared to a hardtail. And in so doing, conserve more energy in the long run. You will ride through stuff instead of finding a clean line on the trail as compared to a hardtail.
Ultimately, only you can tell what will suit you and your riding style.
Find a buddy and test ride a proper full sus bike and then decide.

I want in on the trail work.
Let me know when and I will get my riding buddies to join in. It's time we put in the effort to work on the trails that we all enjoy.
Andy.
PS: I have an idea after our little chat at 4K a couple of weeks back. Will call.....

Pandora replied to the topic Re: Kiara Trailquest 13/11/2011 in the forums. After having kids, especially an 8mth old it gets a little harder. Ahem!...*excuse excuse*.
I enjoy the events in Kiara and understand the motivation of the organizers (who do it out of passion) that can be lost with minimal participation. I would have ridden in the rain; that wasn't what stopped me. I'm not made of sugar
Once again, my sincere apologies.
